Cultural and Ethical Issues in Play Therapy

Course Description:

This course will focus on cultural humility in play therapy with the treatment of diverse populations.  Some of the populations to be discussed include:  various tribal cultures, military families, and foster care.   Other cultural, socio-economic, and sexual identity/preferences will also be explored in using various play therapy theories, techniques, and applications.  Ethical considerations regarding working with various cultures and credentialing/marketing as a Registered Play Therapist.

Due to COVID-19 health concerns, this one-time online event has been approved by APT for 15 CONTACT CE Hours. A Zoom link will be sent to registrants that sign up for the training.

At the end of the workshop, the learner will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast the terms: culture, ethnicity, customs, rituals, and traditions; and discuss how those might inform your practice in play therapy.
  2. Demonstrate 2 or more practical applications of adjusting your role as a play therapist to meet the needs of various cultures.
  3. Analyze 2 or more ways how your own culture influences your interactions with play therapy clients that have similar or different cultural backgrounds.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of cultural appropriation and describe 2 or more ethical considerations behind cultural appropriation of toys, techniques, and in the play room.
  5. Describe 2 or more ways how Hofstede’s Dimensions of Culture could inform your play therapy practice in working with various cultures.
  6. Describe 2 or more clinical considerations in implementing play therapy with various ethnic cultures.
  7. Describe 2 or more clinical considerations in implementing play therapy within the cultures of: military, foster care, Native American, and LGBT populations.
  8. Utilize the credentialing procedures outlined by the Association for Play Therapy to fill out their Registered Play Therapist application AND/OR to apply that knowledge as they are gaining training and supervision for their Registered Play Therapist Certification.
  9. Utilize the credentialing procedures outlined by the Association for Play Therapy to analyze ethical considerations in working towards and receiving certification as a Registered Play Therapist.
  10. Recite the requirements to maintain Registered Play Therapist status

Friday Schedule: Training 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM  (15 minute breaks at 2:45 PM  and 7 PM, 30 minute break at 4:45 PM)

Saturday Schedule: Training 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM (15 minute breaks at 10:30 AM and 3:30 PM, 1 hour break at 12:30 PM)

*Must be present the whole training, no partial credit given.  Cancelations received at least 5 days prior to schedule training are refundable less a $35 administration fee.  Cancellations within 5 days prior to scheduled training or missed trainings (no shows) will not be given a refund. Play therapy credit may not be awarded to non-mental health professionals
